La grande actrice Irina Nikolaëvna Arkadina laisse le soleil estival baigner sa gloire et sa maturité dans la propriété familiale où elle se repose en compagnie de son dernier amour, le brillant et célèbre écrivain Trigorine. Sa renommée brille au contraste des repoussoirs dont elle s’entoure habilement, et sa réussite se nourrit de l’échec moqué de son fils, Konstantin, poète maudit, et de Nina, la jeune débutante promise à la catastrophe. « A travers Nina et Konstantin, Tchekhov prévenait peut-être déjà des risques d’une société qui fait du rêve un commerce, et des conséquences d’un narcissisme blessé, déstructuré qui déplace le centre de gravité à l’extérieur de soi. », dit Mikaël Serre. Le metteur en scène, qui a l’habitude « de travailler sur des textes qui témoignent des émotions de notre temps », voit dans l’ambivalence des sentiments entre Konstantin et sa mère et dans les rêves de starlette de Nina l’occasion d’échos et de correspondances entre le texte de Tchekhov et la société contemporaine. Choisissant une mise en scène qui soit « comme une fête, quelque chose de l’ordre de l’orgie des sens », Mikaël Serre fait le pari d’un naturalisme qui « ne tue pas l’imaginaire » et révèle, derrière l’ambition et les conflits générationnels, la souffrance universelle du « combat que mène chacun avant tout avec lui-même ».
