« C’est difficile de jouer votre pièce », dit Nina (Anamaria Marinca) à Treplev (Xavier Legrand) au début de La Mouette, « il n’y a pas de personnage vivant ». Vieux perfecto et jean élimé, la comédienne d’origine roumaine entre sur le plateau dans une sorte de quotidienneté dégagée, sans chichi, une simplicité qui confère à ses répliques, à ses attitudes, quelque chose de juste, d’immédiat, de fortement concret. Ainsi, à l’instar de tous ses partenaires de jeu (Christian Benedetti – Trigorine, Brigitte Barilley – Arkadina, Nina Renaux – Macha, Marie-Laudes Emond – Paulina, Christophe Caustier – Medvedenko, Philippe Crubézy – Dorn, Laurent Huon – Chamraïev, Jean-Pierre Moulin – Sorine), l’actrice apporte un criant contre-exemple aux paroles de Nina. Des personnages vivants, il y en a bien sûr dans la pièce aux accents tragi-comiques d’Anton Tchekhov, peut-être l’une de ses plus touchantes, mais également dans la version brute et dépouillée qu’en propose aujourd’hui Christian Benedetti.
Une proposition théâtrale vivante, ouverte, dépouillée
Cette version – servie par des interprètes qui s’inscrivent dans l’espace scénique de manière organique, comme les acteurs d’une humanité à la fois contemporaine et atemporelle – fait résonner les questionnements de La Mouette (la vocation artistique, les impulsions de l’amour, les contraintes et les impasses de l’existence…) à travers un « ici et maintenant » théâtral d’une grande liberté. Réduisant à presque rien les accessoires et éléments de décor de sa représentation (des chaises, une lampe, un banc, une table…), échappant aux archétypes naturalistes des protagonistes tchékhoviens, Christian Benedetti crée un spectacle centré sur l’adresse et l’incarnation du texte, un spectacle dont l’authenticité engendre une poésie de l’espacement et du quotidien. La densité de silences qui parfois se distendent, la nudité d’un plateau vide au sein duquel surgissent et se découpent les fulgurances de la pièce, la dimension multifrontale d’une représentation qui multiplie les points de vue et les points d’écoute des spectateurs… Cette Mouette est intrigante, palpitante. Profondément vivante. Elle nous fait ressentir quelques-uns des aspects les plus troublants de l’humain.
