Difficile bien entendu de matérialiser le temps sur un plateau. En compagnie du physicien Peter Galison, professeur à Harvard, l’artiste sud-africain propose pourtant rien moins que d’interroger le temps absolu de Newton, le temps relatif d’Einstein et la distorsion de l’espace-temps à travers un univers de sons, de chants et d’images. Rendu célèbre par ses dessins au fusain – qui se succèdent en portant chacun la trace du précédent, avec effet de rémanence, comme les moments de la vie, qui en s’enchaînant se fondent ensemble – William Kentridge ne vise pas un spectacle métaphorique mais bien davantage des histoires, scénarios associant abstractions scientifiques et phénomènes spectaculaires tangibles.
« Un art politique, c’est-à-dire ambigu, contradictoire, inachevé »
En parallèle d’une exposition qui se tiendra durant tout le festival à la Chapelle du Miracle, pour ce spectacle conçu avec le compositeur Philip Miller, la chorégraphe Dada Masilo et la vidéaste Catherine Meyburgh, William Kentridge invite donc acteurs, danseurs et chanteurs à faire écho à des questions scientifiques mais aussi à rôder du côté du côté du destin, de l’accélération du temps contemporain et aussi – thème primordial pour ce blanc né en Afrique du Sud, qui veut « pratiquer un art politique, c’est-à-dire ambigu, contradictoire, inachevé » – du temps colonial. Un spectacle qui tente donc tout autant d’abolir le temps, que les frontières entre l’art et les sciences, et entre disciplines artistiques. Une habitude pour ce plasticien surdoué, qui n’en est pas à son coup d’essai du côté du plateau.
