La Nostalgie de l’avenir,inspirée deLa Mouettede Tchékhov, se resserre autour de six personnages, accentuant davantage une atmosphère contemporaine plutôt que l’époque russe des samovars. Le médecin Dorn, personnage moderne et observateur, à la lisière de l’action, apporte sa note de comédie à une œuvre qui pourrait aisément sombrer dans la tragédie. Nina, la jeune comédienne, hésite entre l’amour pour Kostia/Treplev, le fils de la grande actrice Irina, et l’amour pour l’amant de cette dernière, l’écrivain Trigorine. L’intrigue se noue autour de deux esthétiques, l’une, profondément nouvelle, représentée par Kostia, tandis que l’autre, symbolisée par sa mère, est révolue par trop de superficialité. Le Kostia version 2012 est rivé à son ordinateur et à ses images, chercheur de formes nouvelles exprimant notre présent. Doutes, impressions, sensations : chacun tente de vivre au-delà des émotions et du rêve.
