Il est souvent périlleux, pour un metteur en scène de théâtre, de s’aventurer sur les terres de pièces mythifiées par le cinéma. La Nuit de l’iguane, écrite par Tennessee Williams en 1961 puis portée sur grand écran par John Huston trois ans plus tard, fait partie de ces œuvres dramatiques entièrement phagocytées par le succès de leur adaptation cinématographique. La luxuriance et la beauté de la nature mexicaine, la sensualité de corps qui se cherchent dans une atmosphère de moiteur troublante, la présence magnétique de Richard Burton, Ava Gardner, Deborah Kerr… Il serait parfaitement illusoire de souhaiter retrouver, sur un plateau de théâtre, la puissance d’illustration photographique qu’offre le cinéma. Georges Lavaudant le sait bien. Il s’agit d’un metteur en scène bien trop fin pour se laisser aller à ce genre de tentations. Se tenant depuis toujours à distance des projets purement réalistes ou psychologiques, l’ancien directeur du Théâtre national de l’Odéon présente une Nuit de l’iguane qui s’affranchit de manière radicale de l’imagerie laissée par la production hollywoodienne. Il crée ainsi une représentation de toute beauté, une représentation stylisée, exigeante, épurée à l’extrême, qui bénéficie d’une distribution prestigieuse : Astrid Bas, Anne Benoit, Pierre Debauche, Sara Forestier, Tcheky Karyo, Dominique Reymond…
Un lacis d’avancées sourdes et souterraines
C’est d’ailleurs en grande partie autour de la singularité et de la densité de ces comédiens que le metteur en scène fonde sa représentation, autour de leur capacité à investir de façon personnelle, profondément intérieure, les lignes de force traversant La Nuit de l’iguane. Cette proposition théâtrale est tout le contraire d’une proposition à effets. Mettant à nu la pièce du dramaturge américain, ne s’intéressant ni à la superficie des relations humaines ni aux détails des situations (les comédiens et le metteur en scène ont procédé, collégialement, à un important travail de coupes), Georges Lavaudant centre son regard sur les avancées sourdes et souterraines qui lentement se dessinent derrière le choc des solitudes que révèle le plateau. Des avancées mystérieuses, tout d’abord presque imperceptibles, qui peu à peu s’imposent de manière quasi suprasensible. Au sein d’une superbe scénographie signée Jean-Pierre Vergier, les interprètes ne cherchent en effet aucune efficacité de jeu immédiate. Ils prennent des chemins théâtraux beaucoup plus énigmatiques et ambitieux. Des chemins sur lesquels ils parviendront à dévoiler les douleurs profondes, les tourments existentiels d’êtres en quête de vérité intime, d’êtres comme en exil parmi les réalités du monde.
