C’est dans le fracas d’un naufrage que se découvre l’Illyrie, territoire d’imaginaires où Shakespeare déroule sa Nuit des rois (1601), vertigineuse comédie des sens, tout en travestissements, renversements, traquenards et jeux d’illusions… Séparée de son jumeau Sébastien disparu dans les flots, Viola se déguise en page et entre au service du duc Orsino, qui l’envoie porter offrande de son fol amour auprès de l’inflexible Olivia, chaste comtesse recluse dans son deuil… qui succombe aux charmes juvéniles de cet étrange messager. Et tandis que les cœurs s’emballent et les destins s’emmêlent, ça complote à tout va alentour, petit marquis, chevalier en goguette, fou défroqué et fringante soubrette ourdissant quelques malins tours pour dénouer les attaches de leurs conditions sociales. Ce faisant, c’est-à-dire dûment arrosé, les joyeux drilles décapsulent tout pareil ambitions inavouées et pulsions cadenassées dans les chairs par le sceau des apparences. L’intrigue va bon train et tresse ainsi imbroglios et quiproquos, faufilant ensemble le lyrisme et la farce, l’intime et l’épique, l’étrange et le trivial, quitte à dévergonder les mots au passage. Jusqu’au point où simulacre et sincérité finissent par se confondre et désorienter tous les repères.
Fêtards avinés
Loin de lisser le baroque sous l’apprêt de l’esthétique, Jacques Vincey force au contraire les artifices du théâtre, use des symboles et du décalage pour dévoiler les multiples facettes de cette singulière comédie de cœur et de cour. Son Illyrie vogue aux confins du rêve, sans doute près des terres d’enfance, là où chacun cherche son rôle sur la scène du monde, là où l’identité sexuelle est encore floutée par les premiers émois du désir. L’espace se déploie par glissements successifs, coulisse de l’opacité à la transparence, inverse le haut et le bas… révélant peu à peu les êtres encartés sous les masques. Ici, l’amour prend les saveurs douces-amères de la mélancolie, les stratégies de séduction s’égarent dans le chassé-croisé des sentiments, l’oisiveté aristocratique s’étanche au whisky-confettis. A ce jeu-là, les comédiens font merveille et croquent avec délice la langue de Shakespeare, goûteusement traduite par Jean-Michel Désprats. Cette mise en scène surprenante distille toute les questions identitaires, le narcissisme amoureux, la difficulté à communiquer, la nostalgie, l’insatisfaction du désir… qui font de cette Nuit des rois une triste comédie.
