C’est par le hasard d’un naufrage que se découvre l’Illyrie, territoire d’imaginaires où Shakespeare déroule sa Nuit des rois (1601), vertigineuse spirale de sens et d’indécence, tout en travestissements, renversements, traquenards et jeux d’illusions. Sauvée de la noyade et croyant son jumeau Sébastien à jamais perdu dans les flots, la jeune Viola se déguise en page et entre au service du duc Orsino, qui l’envoie porter le chant de son amour auprès de l’inébranlable Olivia, comtesse percluse dans son chaste deuil… qui cède pourtant aux grâces juvéniles de ce messager inattendu. En ce jour d’épiphanie, douzième et dernière nuit du carnaval des fêtes de Noël, la sarabande effrontée des désirs brise le verrou des apparences et bienséances qui ferrent les ambitions inavouées et pulsions au plus secret des cœurs. « L’utilisation des masques de commedia dell’arte s’impose dans cette pièce qui fait référence, à travers les personnages, à travers l’intrigue comme à travers son titre, au carnaval. » explique Jean-Hervé Appéré, qui a beaucoup fréquenté Molière avant de signer la traduction, l’adaptation et la mise en scène de cette comédie de Shakespeare. Avec des tréteaux pour tout décor, les comédiens, tout à la fois chanteurs, musiciens, danseurs, cascadeurs, escrimeurs, manipulateurs et pantomimeurs, mélangent l’acidité et l’exubérance de la farce à la mélancolie des sentiments amoureux, frottant le trivial et la poésie jusqu’à trouver l’unité des contraires.
