La Fête des étoiles est associée dans le Japon rural à l’O-Bon, la Fête des morts, et à l’événement final qui fait flotter sur la rivière des lanternes de papier guidant les morts vers l’au-delà. La Nuit du train de la voie lactée, l’adaptation scénique par Oriza Hirata de la nouvellede Miyazawa, évoque cette fête traditionnelle à travers une situation onirique, et de là surgira le drame. La scène en soi peut paraître funèbre, mais elle reste colorée et lumineuse, et au-delà des songes, elle fait rêver les êtres minuscules que nous sommes – petits et grands -, sensibles au lien effectif qui relie les disparus à l’immensité de l’espace céleste, lieu de l’origine et du néant. « On pense que les morts reviennent sur terre un certain temps », dit la maîtresse d’école japonaise à ses élèves occidentaux assis sur leur cube de couleur printanière, sac à dos aux pieds, comme tous les petits écoliers facétieux et turbulents du monde. La galaxie du système solaire, « la rivière qui coule dans le ciel », est visible à l’œil nu sur un vaste écran avec toute la finesse de pinceau d’une mise en scène espiègle, attentive à la contemplation infinie de la Voie lactée. Les constellations à l’appellation poétique apparaissent, le Taureau, le Cocher, le Lézard, le Cygne, Pégase, le Scorpion, la Grande Ourse…
Rencontres fabuleuses et insolites
L’infini est confronté à l’éloignement comme à la proximité, physiquement et selon la dimension du cœur et les relations mutuelles. Les enfants s’inquiètent de la séparation, s’interrogent sur l’instant immédiat comme sur la durée. Deux garçonnets, Campanella et Giovanni, aimeraient rester ensemble « toute » la vie ; ils vérifient leur amitié en prenant le train de l’au-delà. Ce voyage imaginaire est propice aux rencontres fabuleuses – le chasseur d’oiseaux migrateurs, le savant, le contrôleur -, une initiation menant au sentiment d’exister et à la douleur de la perte de ceux qu’on aime. Giovanelli a un ennemi, Zanelli, qui l’humilie ; or, selon la philosophie bouddhiste, il faut savoir transcender le conflit, ne pas condamner. Campanella porte ainsi secours à Zanelli sur le point de se noyer, il perd la vie dans ce sacrifice généreux, mais le voilà réincarné en étoile de lumière. « Centaure, fais tomber la rosée ! », est un leitmotiv du spectacle, le vœu cher d’une tombée de pluie d’étoiles. C’est le miroir céleste inversé sur la terre de la rivière illuminée de barques et bougies. Le spectacle, à l’écoute de l’enfance, fraye avec le conte métaphysique, bousculant l’ordre du temps dans la narration, et touchant à la question ultime du bonheur et du partage. Un cabinet de curiosités à la fraîcheur orientale apaisante.
