Un homme se lance dans une phrase folle. Une phrase foisonnante, enfiévrée. Une suite d’aveux tumultueuse et parfois trouble. Un homme — un étranger, comme il ne cesse de le répéter — lance le flot discontinu de sa parole pour exister aux yeux d’un inconnu rencontré au coin d’une rue, pour « le retenir par tous les mots qu’il peut trouver » a dit Bernard-Marie Koltès, le plus longtemps possible, ou définitivement. Il lui parle de sa vie, des choses qui occupent son esprit, des questions contre lesquelles il bute, cherchant un point de passage qui ne semble pas lui apparaître, il lui parle des impulsions qui le traversent, du monde dans lequel il cherche une place, un moyen d’ancrer son existence. Il se livre à lui comme on ne peut, sans doute, se livrer qu’à un inconnu rencontré par hasard, une nuit comme une autre, une nuit pluvieuse, au détour d’une marche sans but et sans grand espoir. Ecrit par Bernard-Marie Koltès à l’âge de vingt-huit ans, La Nuit juste avant les forêts contient déjà les grandes thématiques qui marqueront, plus tard, l’œuvre de l’écrivain disparu en 1989 : la quête d’amour, le rapport à l’étranger, la solitude, la palpitation du territoire intime, l’exclusion, la violence, la marginalité…
Les tourments d’un être solitaire
Des thématiques dont Romain Duris s’empare aujourd’hui avec force et agilité, prouvant qu’il peut être aussi convaincant sur une scène de théâtre que sur un plateau de cinéma. Au sein d’une mise en scène pourtant sans inspiration de Patrice Chéreau et Thierry Thieû Niang, le comédien fait en effet preuve d’une présence indéniable. Entravé par un lit d’hôpital qui vient offrir — de façon complètement anecdotique — un point d’appui réaliste au dépouillement de l’espace scénique, Romain Duris confère au personnage de La Nuit juste avant les forêts une dimension terrienne, charnelle, en tout point corporelle. Bien sûr, on est loin du voyage mental, abstrait, auquel peut renvoyer ce texte flamboyant. Mais, si cette vision très terre à terre du monologue de Bernard-Marie Koltès réduit certaines de ses perspectives littéraires et poétiques, il permet à son interprète de révéler un sens du concret et un investissement scénique sans faille. On découvre, ici, un comédien ardent et talentueux, qui devrait, plus souvent, venir arpenter les scènes de nos théâtres.
