On sait l’importance de « faire répertoire », de pouvoir reprendre des pièces anciennes, d’œuvrer pour que les créations ne soient pas vouées à l’effacement, et entrent, sinon dans l’Histoire, tout du moins dans la mémoire collective. La démarche d’Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, vingt ans après la création de La Nuit transfigurée, n’est pourtant pas de cet ordre. Il ne s’agit pas ici d’une « reprise », ou d’une tentative archéologique de faire resurgir les traces d’une œuvre passée. La chorégraphe s’est lancée ici dans une réécriture de sa propre pièce, démarche qui dépasse le simple désir d’en offrir une nouvelle version. Des douze danseurs, il n’en reste plus que deux, dans l’ombre d’un troisième. C’est ici la notion de couple qui est mise en lumière, presque mise à nu dans le dépouillement d’un plateau réduit pour l’occasion à sa plus simple expression. Le choix musical est aussi affaire de réécriture : il s’agit de la version pour orchestre, ultérieure au premier jet de Schoenberg pour sextuor à cordes.
