Selon son habitude, Valérie Lesort ne prend pas le parti de la transposition. Elle inscrit sa lecture littérale du destin de la Périchole, inspiré de Mérimée, dans une scénographie très colorée de pittoresque exotique, « avec un mélange joyeux de tenues traditionnelles péruviennes et de french cancan ». Dans cette fraîcheur visuelle, elle « distille quelques éléments réalistes au milieu du conte, pour révéler la cruauté d’une histoire où l’on force les foules à s’abrutir par l’alcool ». Hergé et Tintin et les Picaros ne sont pas loin dans cette fantaisie d’Offenbach où le message politique affleure sous les péripéties de la courtisane famélique. Le rôle-titre sera incarné par l’une des plus grandes orfèvres de la scène lyrique, Stéphanie d’Oustrac, entourée par un condensé des meilleures voix françaises du moment sous la direction de Julien Leroy.
