Marc Minkowski ne cache pas – et ce depuis longtemps – son goût pour l’œuvre d’Offenbach. Il a dirigé tous ses ouvrages les plus célèbres, de La Belle Hélène à La Grande Duchesse de Gérolstein, dans des interprétations qui font désormais référence. En ouvrant sa saison à la tête de l’Opéra de Bordeaux avec La Périchole, il fait le choix d’une œuvre plus rare, qui avait quelque peu dérouté le public parisien lors de sa création il y a exactement cent cinquante ans. Non pas que le compositeur y ait perdu son entrain, mais ici plus que dans d’autres opéras bouffes, la fantaisie, la griserie et les délectables espagnolades s’y teintent d’amertume. De cette histoire exotique adaptée de Mérimée (nous sommes au Pérou où le vice-roi s’encanaille mais où les chanteurs de rue n’échappent pas à la misère), brossée à grands traits par les librettistes Meilhac et Halévy, Offenbach fait une œuvre finalement assez complexe et douce-amère. Avec Aude Extrémo, Stanislas de Barbeyrac, Enguerrand de Hys ou Marc Mauillon, la distribution est idéale.
