« Une danseuse doit se dessiner avec goût, et naturellement, dans la moindre des poses. Elle doit pouvoir servir, à chaque instant, de modèle au peintre et au sculpteur. » notait Edgar Degas, qui, dès le début des années 1870, chercha à saisir cette grâce mystérieuse dans l’étreinte du dessin. Fréquentant assidûment l’Opéra, il fit poser des ballerines dans son atelier, dont une certaine Marie Van Goethem qu’il immortalisa sous les traits de la sculpture Petite Danseuse de quatorze ans. S’inspirant du destin funeste de la jeune fille et de l’atmosphère sulfureuse du 19ème siècle, le chorégraphe et maitre de ballet Patrice Bart retrace en imaginaire le quotidien d’une des danseuses du Corps de ballet, du studio de répétition à l’atelier de l’artiste, du cabaret à la prison. Portée par la création musicale de Denis Levaillant et la troupe de l’Opéra national de Paris, ce conte moderne dévoile aussi les coulisses de Garnier et révèle l’imaginaire de la danse classique à travers l’œuvre de Degas.
