Isolé par sa surdité à la fin de sa vie, Beethoven s’éloigne des tendances musicales de son temps et explore des chemins inouïs, avec une réinterprétation des traditions et les ressources de la variation pour fluidifier la forme sonate. Le vaste troisième mouvement de l’op. 109 en constitue une illustration magistrale par un développement des potentialités harmoniques et rythmiques du thème avec un systématisme qui rappelle Bach. C’est ce même art de la synthèse que l’on retrouve dans l’op.110 qui, à l’inverse, privilégie une allure décantée et se referme sur une fugue aussi condensée que lumineuse. Une telle réinvention des héritages du passé est au cœur de la musique de Philippe Hersant et d’Oscar Strasnoy, dont Mara Dobresco joue deux créations. Le Benedictus du premier révèle, par son titre, l’empreinte du répertoire religieux, en particulier baroque, tandis que le Tombeau de Monjeau, sonnant comme un rappel de la musique ancienne autant que sa relecture ravélienne, pratique le palimpseste des genres et des époques cher au compositeur franco-argentin.
