On ne présente plus ce mélodrame en deux actes, contant les mésaventures d’une servante condamnée à mort pour un vol qu’elle n’a pas commis et dont le véritable auteur – une pie ! – n’est découvert qu’au dernier moment. La création à Milan le 31 mai 1817 se fait dans la précipitation et Rossini, dont on connaît les prodigieuses capacité et rapidité d’écriture, a décrit les circonstances rocambolesques dans lesquelles il a terminé son ouvrage : « J’ai composé l’ouverture de La pie voleuse, le jour même de sa création, dans le grenier de la Scala où le directeur me séquestrait. J’étais placé sous surveillance de quatre machinistes qui avaient ordre de récupérer les pages de mon manuscrit, l’une après l’autre, et de les jeter par la fenêtre aux copistes qui les attendaient pour accomplir leur tâche. Les machinistes avaient également ordre de me jeter par la même fenêtre si le manuscrit n’avançait pas… ». Cette nouvelle production mise en scène par Henri Lazarini et placée sous la direction musicale de Dominique Rouits a la particularité de situer l’action de l’opéra dans la ville de Massy ! Avec les voix de Jean-François Vinciguerra, Sophie Pondjiclis, Luciano Botelho, Magali de Prelle, Jean-Marie Fremeau, Caroline Fevre et Nicolas Courjal, les Chœurs de l’Opéra de Marseille et l’Orchestre de l’Opéra de Massy.
