Soixante ans d’Histoire allemande, de 1934 à 1993, défilent à travers plusieurs générations de femmes. Et pourtant, la pièce du jeune dramaturge Marius von Mayenburg, issu de la première génération d’adultes de l’Allemagne réunifiée, n’est pas une pièce historique mais bien une pièce sur la mémoire, avec tout ce que cela implique de subjectivité et d’émotions entrelacées. D’autant qu’au théâtre les fantômes ont une présence qu’on ne retrouve nulle part ailleurs… à part peut-être dans nos imaginaires ô combien habités ! Pas question ici de quête de vérité : on voit un échantillon d’humanité se débattre pour relier passé et avenir, une famille aux prises avec la douleur et l’horreur de l’Histoire, même si aucun personnage n’est un salaud avéré. De petits arrangements en opportunités, voilà déjà de quoi alimenter les tourments. 1993 : la grand-mère, sa fille et sa petite-fille retrouvent ce qui fut autrefois leur maison de famille, grâce aux lois de restitution qui découlent de la réunification de l’Allemagne. En fait une situation d’émigré pour un retour dans sa région d’origine devenue méconnaissable après quarante ans d’absence et d’un régime socialiste radicalement. Cette maison a été achetée en 1934 à un couple juif contraint à la fuite.
Scruter les rêves et les cauchemars
Les histoires familiales et nationales tissent nécessairement des liens problématiques qui mêlent intime et collectif, qui obligent la conscience à se situer par rapport aux faits. Un constat à l’évidence glaçante constitue la toile de fond : ce pays hautement civilisé et cultivé s’est laissé engloutir par une barbarie sauvage et industrielle. Le dramaturge « observe comment vivent les hommes dans une zone grise entre chien et loup. Il scrute leurs rêves et leurs cauchemars. » Ainsi plus que les événements objectifs, les accommodements avec le réel et le fardeau des héritages ont ici toute leur place. « C’est la peur qui me pousse, et j’essaye d’en trouver les raisons. » dit l’auteur avec une lucidité qui induit une ambition artistique exigeante ! Fin germaniste, connaisseur avisé du théâtre d’Outre Rhin, Bernard Sobel a l’excellente idée de créer ce texte en France au Théâtre Dijon Bourgogne. Parce que l’homme est éternellement cet être en questionnement qui subit le réel, mais qui aussi s’en empare avec sa sensibilité et son intelligence, le juge, prend parti, déprime, se ragaillardit, prend ses distances, le détourne, etc. Tout un programme, que la scène exprime avec Anne Alvaro, Claire Aveline, Priscilla Bescond, Anne-Lise Heimburger, Edith Scob et Gaëtan Vassart.
