« Dans La Pluie d’été, Duras plonge tête la première dans le monde des « prolos »… C’est comme si elle revenait, des années après sa période militante, au thème du prolétariat. », dit Emmanuel Daumas, qui considère cette œuvre comme un testament dicté « dans le demi-coma d’une chambre d’hôpital », à la fin de la vie de Duras. La Pluie d’été reprend les prédilections récurrentes de l’écrivain, et notamment celui d’une famille en marche vers sa destruction, mais aborde aussi un thème sans équivalent dans son œuvre, celui du « changement définitif et irrémédiable de visage de la banlieue ». À Vitry-sur-Seine, Ernesto vit avec ses parents, des immigrés italo-slaves, pauvres et incultes, et tous ses frères et sœurs, dans un pavillon prêté par l’Assistance sociale, au milieu de la verdure. Après avoir quitté l’école « parce qu’on y apprend des choses qu’on ne sait pas », Ernesto, un soir de pluie d’été, s’arrache aux siens, brisant définitivement l’équilibre familial, tandis que la verte banlieue est peu à peu recouverte par le béton. « La Pluie d’été est pour moi une pièce sur le devenir adulte. », dit le jeune metteur en scène, qui choisit de porter ce texte à la scène en « tension entre l’imaginaire et l’instantané », entre récit et dialogues, pour tâcher d’interroger au mieux la sortie de l’enfance et le vertigineux sentiment de vanité que provoque la conscience d’exister et sur lequel, déjà, méditait l’Ecclésiaste.
