C’est en 1980, après 20 ans passés à Avignon, que Hubert Jappelle s’est installé à Eragny-sur-Oise pour y fonder le Théâtre de l’Usine. Aujourd’hui, dans cette ancienne fabrique de papier, le metteur en scène présente La Poudre aux yeux, une comédie de mœurs d’Eugène Labiche au sein de laquelle deux familles de petits-bourgeois, feignant de mener grand train de vie, tentent mutuellement de se persuader qu’elles appartiennent à la haute société. L’enjeu de cette double mascarade ? Le mariage de Frédéric et Emmeline, leurs enfants respectifs, et le montant de la dot qu’apportera la jeune fille. « Eugène Labiche est l’observateur le plus pertinent de la société du Second Empire, explique Philippe Soupault dans l’essai qu’il a consacré au dramaturge. Il a su la comprendre et la décrire avec une minutie et une énergie remarquables. » Une minutie et une énergie qui, en décryptant les outrances les plus ridicules de l’âme humaine, font de ses personnages des pantins d’une grande drôlerie.
