Comique de situation, hasards malencontreux, face-à-face entre des personnes qui devraient s’éviter, La Puce à l’oreille (1907) de Feydeau n’y va pas par quatre chemins. Ce que le personnage de fiction redoute – son implication dans le jeu croisé et improbable des époux et épouses, amants et maîtresses – se produit immanquablement en provoquant chez le spectateur un rire éclatant. Le vaudeville taille à la serpe le champ des fausses apparences et des hypocrisies vulgaires d’une bourgeoisie parvenue. Ainsi, Raymonde de Chantebise, avec le panache d’Émeline Bayart, soupçonne son très sérieux Victor-Emmanuel de Chantebise de la tromper – David Ayala en homme d’affaires obtus rivé à son job. À l’origine du comique est le doute, cet état d’incertitude, de suspension et de défiance qui fait qu’on ne parvient pas à décider du vrai ou du faux. Et la confiance en ce que l’on croyait savoir s’écroule brutalement. Ainsi, Raymonde Chantebise fait bruyamment appel à son entourage afin de démasquer le mensonge, à son amie Lucienne (dégaine inouïe de Stéphanie Pasquet) ou à son propre soupirant et ami de la famille, Romain Tournel (Brontis Jodorowsky, bourreau des coeurs).
Des figures savoureuses et grotesques, victimes du mépris social
Le lieu stratégique, représentatif de l’arrivisme collectif et du chaos des vies sexuelles, est l’Hôtel du Minet Galant où les personnages de l’intrigue – médecin, secrétaire, valet – accomplissent un chemin de croix hors du salut. Ce sont des ombres humaines qui hantent ces alcôves, comme le valet Poche – sosie exact de Chantebise, interprété comme attendu par le même David Ayala, cette fois sauvageon hagard et malmené. Une cascade de quiproquos s’ensuit et la comédie légère et divertissante bat son plein, propice aux rebondissements et aux exagérations loufoques. D’autres figures cocasses logent dans cette maison close où ne vont que les couples mariés, « mais pas ensemble ». Le plaisir du spectateur est entier, le rire le maintient dans un état de supériorité et de distance face à la bêtise ridicule. Les comédiens, dirigés par Paul Golub, croquent des figures savoureuses et grotesques, victimes du mépris social et du peu de cas qu’on fait d’elles. Or, même si Stendhal écrit que « le comique franc n’est pas permis à une femme : on ne lui pardonne guère de montrer un ridicule réel, cela lui ôte toute grâce… », il nous faut saluer les silhouettes de comédie inventées par les métiers d’Émelyne Bayart, de Stéphanie Pasquet et de Carolina Pecheny-Durozier. Un rire sans entraves.
