Tout part d’un tableau : celui d’Alfred Loudet au musée de la Révolution française à Vizille, représentant Robespierre, Danton et Marat. Contrairement au livre Les Onze de Pierre Michon qui imagine un tableau du Louvre représentant les onze membres du Comité du salut public, le tableau de Loudet existe réellement. En revanche, la confrontation entre les trois personnages mythiques de la Révolution française est purement fictive. Sur la lancée de Victor Hugo qui imagine leur rencontre dans 1793, Jean-Vincent Brisa fait donc dialoguer Marat, Danton et Robespierre : « Ce sont leurs idées qui marqueront la division politique de la France dont nous voyons encore les effets dans notre monde contemporain où la République est toujours en danger. Nous parlerons de la naissance des idées qui ont bouleversé le monde entier : l’abolition de la royauté et la proclamation de la République. Le texte traite de l’utopie républicaine, ce rêve qui a fini par se radicaliser, en se transformant en cauchemar tyrannique menant le peuple à s’entretuer et laissant le champ libre à la dictature. » Une pièce qui donne chair à trois conceptions opposées de la République.
