Vous avez monté beaucoup d’auteurs contemporains, pourquoi ce choix plus classique ?
Marion Bierry : Autant j’ai monté Belbel ou Lee Hall alors qu’ils n’étaient pas connus parce qu’il y avait eu avec eux une rencontre foudroyante, autant le texte de Schnitzler m’a longtemps poursuivi. Il m’est tombé dessus quand je suis rentrée au conservatoire de Vienne, puis j’ai eu le déclic pour le mettre en scène en en confiant la lecture à des étudiants. C’est là que je me suis dit : il y a un lieu à la base, une espèce de bouge qui se fragmente, qui rassemble les personnages au début, et où ils se retrouvent ensuite, tandis qu’ils ont été fauchés par la guerre.

Qu’est-ce qui vous attache tant à ce texte ?
M.B : Sa musique. A Vienne, comme en Italie, on s’écoute parler. Et cela produit un bavardage musical qui permet de dire des choses profondes, tellement profondes qu’on ne peut pas les dire sérieusement. Cette légèreté est revendiquée par Schnitzler à la manière d’un Beaumarchais qui dit qu’il faut rire du monde pour ne pas en pleurer. Et sa pièce tend selon moi à rendre précieux le vivant. C’est en effet un texte métaphysique où le plaisir est une chose essentielle. Il témoigne d’une foi en l’homme et en son audace qu’il faut faire entendre dans la société d’aujourd’hui où la mort nous est rendue tellement présente qu’elle fait de nous des êtres frileux.
Comment cette foi en l’homme se traduit-elle ?
M.B : Syphilis ou pas, les personnages se jettent dans la sexualité et témoignent d’un monde – la Vienne d’avant-guerre – dont Schnitzler pressent parfaitement qu’il est en train de disparaître. La joie y fait résonner le désespoir, le jouir n’y est pas uniquement dépossession de l’autre, et la prostituée que rencontre au début un soldat, à la fin, le comte la nomme et la rhabille.
