Alors que viennent de s’achever les représentations d’Yvonne, princesse de Bourgogne, dernier en date des opéras de Philippe Boesmans (né en 1936), au Palais Garnier, l’amphithéâtre de l’Opéra Bastille accueille celui par lequel le compositeur belge s’est fait connaître du grand public. Lors de sa création à Bruxelles en 1993, La Ronde, d’après Arthur Schnitzler,était mise en scène par Luc Bondy, également auteur du livret (comme il le sera pour les trois opéras suivants). Devenu un classique du répertoire lyrique contemporain, l’opéra est aujourd’hui présenté dans une version de chambre avec une mise en scène signée par Harry Kupfer, dont l’étourdissante production des Soldats, présentée à l’Opéra Bastille il y a quinze ans, est restée dans les mémoires. Du froid marivaudage d’Arthur Schnitzler, Philippe Boesmans a tiré un opéra atypique – dix dialogues s’y succèdent – mais irrésistiblement entraînant, où s’expriment son grand sens de la vocalité ainsi qu’un humour non moins aigu.
