On qualifie souvent vos créations de “spectacles-performances”. Cette dénomination vous semble-t-elle pertinente ?
Christophe Fiat : Le terme de performance est, pour moi, inséparable de la notion de discours performatif. Prendre la parole sur scène, c’est faire quelque chose qui ébranle la conscience du spectateur. Ce « quelque chose » passe par la transmission d’une histoire qui oscille entre le reportage et le scénario. Mes performances mêlent la poésie sonore et la philosophie post-moderne, définissent une forme théâtrale qui relève de la rhapsodie.
Comment caractérisez-vous, vous-même, votre univers artistique ?
Ch. F. : Je suis écrivain et je considère la scène comme un espace live au sens où ce terme est utilisé dans la culture rock : comme le fait d’assister à une représentation où les acteurs sont là, présents pour un public. Cela peut sembler réducteur et insuffisant pour des spectateurs habitués au clinquant, à l’artifice et au relief dont on est coutumier dans le théâtre français. Mais étant donné que je privilégie la force de la parole à la notion de rôle, il est nécessaire pour moi d’avoir recours à une esthétique épurée et minimaliste, prenant le risque d’être austère. Sans doute y a-t-il dans ce travail autour de la figure de Madame Wagner des éléments de protestantisme qui s’accommodent très bien, et de l’univers allemand des Wagner, et de l’univers du rock dont l’origine est puritaine – la grâce.

Qu’est-ce qui vous a amené à vous intéresser à Cosima Wagner ?
Ch. F. : Quand on s’intéresse au discours performatif, il est important de se questionner sur la parole d’une femme. Je raconte sa vie, de la mort de Richard Wagner à sa propre mort, en 1930. C’est une époque où le féminisme prend son essor. Cosima Wagner est une femme haïe et détestée. Non seulement, elle ne cesse de revendiquer sa place dans un monde d’hommes comme directrice du Festival de Bayreuth, mais elle répond aux insultes par la provocation. Quand elle transmet son héritage à son fils homosexuel, elle s’inscrit délibérément dans une lutte sans merci contre le phallocentrisme européen. Le charme de cette femme pragmatique et sans concession tenait à sa passion pour un opéra de son mari : le dernier, Parsifal. Cette œuvre est une cérémonie religieuse masculine où est admise une seule femme, Kundry. Dans ma mise en scène, Cosima est Kundry. Si ce n’est que j’ai inversé le masculin et le féminin. J’ai adjoint quatre actrices à un seul acteur.
