Peu après La Surprise de l’amour, Marivaux revisite le ravissement amoureux en donnant La Seconde Surprise de l’amour (1727). La première, avec Arlequin et Colombine, est écrite pour les acteurs allègres de la Comédie-Italienne tandis que la seconde obéit, dit-on, au jeu apprêté du Théâtre-Français, garant de la reconnaissance. Toutefois, La Seconde Surprise est l’occasion d’une promenade sinueuse, à la fois vive et alanguie, sur la Carte mondaine du Tendre avec ses préoccupations sentimentales et libertines. La pièce annonce l’approfondissement des Fausses Confidences dix ans plus tard. Sur les rives balnéaires de deux cabines de plage, Luc Bondy fait de La Seconde Surprise une comédie d’amour qui surfe sur l’analyse psychologique des âmes fragilisées par le doute et guettées par l’aliénation. La Marquise et le Chevalier, inconsolables pour avoir perdu leur amour, s’unissent dans la douleur en se jurant amitié, sentiment d’affection fondé ni sur la parenté ni sur l’attrait sexuel. Cette camaraderie affichée devient bientôt disposition favorable du cœur d’un être pour un autre qu’il reconnaît et qui le reconnaît. L’amitié se dilue en passion instinctive, assujettie au désir tyrannique. La Marquise loue le Chevalier : « Vous êtes le seul qui rendra justice à mes pleurs. Vous me ressemblez, vous êtes né sensible, je le vois bien. »
L’esprit de notre époque qui dénigre et méprise les intellectuels
Or tôt ou tard, les victimes des flèches de Cupidon s’imposent une visite dans les entrelacs de l’amour-propre, de la satisfaction narcissique, du dépit amoureux et de la volonté d’appropriation d’autrui. L’amour se conjugue avec la représentation sociale : « C’est l’opinion qui nous donne tout, qui nous ôte tout. » La Marquise avoue que peu lui importe que le Chevalier l’ait pu refuser, si ce n’est le ton et la manière du geste. Comment reconnaît-on qu’on aime ? Les valets, Lubin (Roch Leibovici) et Lisette (Audrey Bonnet) donnent un écho désinvolte à ce jeu sans fin. Lisette, une fieffée coquine, s’appuie sur les incertitudes du cœur de sa maîtresse pour œuvrer bassement. Les deux compères ironiques font du renvoi d’Hortensius (excellent Pascal Bongard), le philosophe pédant qui dirige les lectures de la Marquise, une scène violente, fidèle à l’esprit de notre époque qui dénigre et méprise les intellectuels, renvoi dû à une populace sensuelle et ignorante qui voit son salut dans les plaisirs immédiats. Micha Lescot et Clotilde Hesme incarnent deux beaux et jeunes maîtres, entre séduction et comédie tirée vers un théâtre policé et de bon goût, tendance boulevard clean, chic et soft.
