L’adolescence « est la période du jeu de masques alternant tendresse et violence, lucidité, rage et désillusion, curiosité et oisiveté », observe Elodie Chanut. « C’est le moment de la vie où l’on refuse le mensonge tout en le pratiquant : n’est-ce pas la définition même du théâtre ? », finit-elle par s’interroger. En nous immergeant dans le quotidien de jeunes de banlieue, La Théorie de l’échec nous place devant toutes les questions qui assaillent un groupe d’adolescents : s’extraire de son milieu, se mélanger, être un autre, affirmer ce que l’on est, rester ensemble… ? Avec « tendresse, lucidité, humour et sans aucune complaisance », Hichem Djemaï a construit une forme de témoignage. Un témoignage qui ne vise à parler ni de la banlieue, ni sur la banlieue, mais depuis la banlieue. Ainsi, en « faisant tomber une à une toutes nos certitudes », le jeune auteur de 21 ans souhaite « nous placer en situation d’écoute totale, d’amusement et de découvert de l’Autre ».
