Créée pour la première fois en France en 1947 par Jean Vilar au Festival d’Avignon, recréée en 1982 à Avignon par Ariane Mnouchkine avec un succès éblouissant, La Tragédie du roi Richard II a connu à nouveau le défi de la cour d’honneur l’été dernier, dans une mise en scène de Jean-Baptiste Sastre manquant hélas de relief et de densité. « Ce qui m’intéresse, c’est de montrer un roi non-roi persécuté par sa propre souveraineté, un homme ordinaire, un homme qui se dépouille » confiait le metteur en scène dans nos colonnes. Littéralement « a king unkinged », selon les mots de Shakespeare, qui dépeint dans la pièce un pouvoir en crise dans ses représentations comme dans son exercice, dans une Angleterre déchirée par des luttes intestines. Denis Podalydès incarne ce roi autodéchu qui se défait du fardeau du pouvoir, roi bouffon éperdu, fragile et enfantin, comme parodiant son abandon, et il a besoin de tout son talent pour ne pas sombrer dans l’outrance. Il oscille sans cesse entre divers pôles, insouciance, douleur, oubli de soi, inconséquence et tristesse…
Monde de souffrance et de désordre
« La couronne je n’en peux plus mais mes souffrances sont toujours à moi », clame-t-il. Dans un monde de souffrance, de désordre et de haine, la monarchie de droit divin n’est plus et le droit se délite et s’abîme dans une anarchie sombre et violente. Ce monde malade est représenté par un jeu de lumières savant. Frédéric Boyer a signé une nouvelle traduction, abrupte et claire, dans une langue contemporaine. Une grosse poutre barre le plateau, et les personnages s’y assoient lors de la première scène. Côté cour, une poupée de cire assise à une vaste table semble laisser voir une étrange tragédie de la mort. Malgré l’immense talent des comédiens présents, Denis Podalydès (Richard II), Vincent Dissez (Bullingbrook, futur Henri IV qui remplacera le Roi), Nathalie Richard (la Reine), Jérôme Derre (York), la mise en scène tout entière et le jeu mal orchestré des acteurs semblent minés par l’incertitude. Ainsi les relations entre les personnages manquent de clarté et de vérité, comme si la théâtralité ici nuisait à l’éclat de la tragédie. Et la bande sonore pénible d’André Serré soutenue par les techniques de l’IRCAM n’apporte pas grand chose. D’éventuels changements dans la distribution (qui avait dû avant le Festival être modifiée tardivement pour cause d’indisponibilité de certains comédiens) et quelques mois de mûrissement auront sans doute amélioré la cohérence de la partition…
