Deux jumeaux, Claus et Lucas, sont confiés à leur grand-mère pour les mettre à l’abri de la guerre. Contraints de vivre chez cette femme cruelle et acariâtre, les deux enfants grandissent sans amour, apprenant à survivre par nécessité et développant ce que la metteur en scène Paula Giusti appelle des « stratégies de subsistance » : « Les jumeaux apprennent ainsi à chercher leur nourriture, à travailler pour avoir de l’argent, mais ils apprennent aussi à lire et à écrire, et c’est là qu’ils découvrent la plus efficace des armes : la fiction. » La compagnie Toda Via Teatro, née en Argentine en 2004, axe ses recherches sur la stylisation et la convention théâtrale. Sa rencontre avec le style épuré d’Agota Kristof et son écriture rétive à tout psychologisme et à tout sentimentalisme est donc l’occasion de rendre compte au mieux de ce parcours initiatique fascinant qu’incarnent sur scène des comédiens de grand talent.
