En 1967, un professeur d’histoire américain, Ron Jones, mena une étude expérimentale du fascisme sur sa classe d’élèves qui n’arrivaient pas à comprendre comment la population allemande avait pu rester passive face au génocide organisé par les Nazis. Devant la tournure des événements, il mit fin à l’expérience au bout de 5 jours. Cet épisode célèbre devient un roman de Todd Strasser (1981) et un film de Dennis Gansel (2008), tous deux intitulés La Vague. C’est en visionnant ce film en cours d’histoire qu’Alexandre Auvergne a eu l’idée de monter sa propre Vague dans le but d’éveiller les consciences. Son spectacle propose ponctuellement une interactivité avec le public, une manière de vivre pleinement la mise en place d’une communauté autocratique.
