OPERA / THEATRE DES CHAMPS-ELYSEES
Après Médée de Cherubini la saison dernière, le Théâtre des Champs-Elysées rend hommage à un autre compositeur italien francisé de la période napoléonienne. La Vestale (1807) de Spontini est familière des mélomanes par les airs gravés dans une traduction italienne par Maria Callas en 1955. La production scaligère de 1954 marqua le début de sa collaboration fructueuse avec Visconti. Inspiré par la noblesse des partitions de Gluck, Spontini a mené l’opéra français vers le genre du grand opéra, en y insufflant encore plus de tragique, et en étoffant l’orchestration par l’usage des cuivres. La nouvelle production d’Eric Lacascade ne cherche pas à actualiser un sujet antique : Julia, devenue vestale lorsque son fiancé Licinius est parti à la guerre, lui ouvre les portes du temple à son retour. Trahie par l’extinction du feu sacré sur lequel elle devait veiller, l’héroïne doit affronter le jugement des prêtres. Dans la fosse, le Cercle de l’Harmonie est dirigé par le talentueux Jérémie Rhorer.
