Les astres, la raison ou l’amour gouvernent-ils les hommes ? Ecrite par Calderon lors du Siècle d’Or espagnol, La vie est un Songe (1635) évoque par son titre l’univers shakespearien. Le début de l’histoire, implacable, semblable à un épisode des Mille et une nuits, ouvre de singulières perspectives dialectiques sur les thèmes de déterminisme et liberté, innocence et culpabilité. Un fils naît au roi de Pologne, Basyle. La mère meurt en couches et le roi voit dans le ciel des signes funestes annonçant que l’enfant deviendra un jour tyran. Pour échapper au présage, le roi déclare Sigismond mort-né et l’enferme dans une tour. William Mesguich interprète ce fils honni, cobaye enfermé dans une cage en plexiglas, et met en scène ce “jeu de boîtes, de dupes, où les personnages décident de fabriquer et transformer eux-mêmes leurs destins.” Drame existentiel…
