Ilka Schönbein insuffle à La Vieille et la Bête un imaginaire figuratif et plastique inventif en tressant quatre contes populaires – la Ballerine, le Petit Âne d’après Grimm, la Mort dans le pommier et Léna qui ne voulait pas aller dans une maison de retraite. Ilka Schönbein a récemment perdu son père, et à côté du Petit Âne, trois récits merveilleux sur la vieillesse et la mort se glissent dans la trame initiale. Une reine supplie le ciel d’avoir un enfant et accouche d’un ânon. L’animal, élevé comme un humain, apprend à jouer du luth et finit par épouser la fille d’un roi. Contre toute apparence, la bête cachait un prince et grâce à l’amour, la musique et le temps qui passe, l’âne est devenu autonome et s’assume loin des contingences du corps et de ses débauches. Comme la bête têtue, les vieillards aussi aspirent à exister, et La Ballerine ne vit qu’à travers ses chaussons roses. Elle aimerait devenir une « ballereine », elle finit en « balleruine ». L’art a maintenu en vie la silhouette décrépie, sur le bout douloureux de ses pointes usées. La comédienne donne vie à ce portrait de danseuse en pied, tutu romantique et sourire en coin en décalage avec le masque mélancolique d’icône tenu à la main, comme un loup vénitien. Dans le conte suivant, la Mort dans le pommier, la vieille avoue à la Mort qu’elle est « presque » prête.
La familiarité stylisée entre le règne animal et l’espèce humaine
Comme dans les Mille et une nuits, la senior retarde le moment fatal : « ce n’est pas moi qui suis vieille et moche, c’est lui l’animal qui s’appelle mon corps. » Or, si elle ne meurt pas, le monde débordera de mourants et d’agonisants… Quant à Léna qui ne voulait pas aller dans une maison de retraite, c’est une « personne âgée » qui s’éteint comme une Pietà dans les bras d’Ilka, dame éplorée tenant sur ses genoux le corps gisant de son parent vieilli redevenu enfant. Baladine accomplie, la manipulatrice fabrique ses propres masques, des faces féminines à la tristesse byzantine, des têtes et des pattes, des griffes et des queues, des crins et des oreilles – des prothèses humaines et animalières, des œuvres d’art. La fascination pour la bête et l’ambivalence de cette relation est mise en lumière à travers la figuration de l’imagerie animale et du monstre composite, la familiarité stylisée entre le règne animal et l’espèce humaine. À cet univers merveilleux, s’ajoute le symbole de la pomme, fruit savoureux servi au public et fruit défendu croqué, au risque de perdre l’innocence et l’immortalité. Il reste à chacun d’« oublier le temps, oublier la vie, être en paix »( Oscar Wilde). Sur le plateau, la malicieuse Alexandra Lupidi en Monsieur Loyal est une instrumentiste inventive. Une lutte fascinée avec la proximité de la mort, toujours éludée.
