A partir de quels textes avez-vous construit ce spectacle ?
Jean-François Matignon : Il y a deux matériaux textuels au départ du projet. Des fragments de Woyzeck (principalement les scènes qui mettent en scène Woyzeck et Marie) et de larges fragments d’un roman noir de David Peace, auteur britannique qui a beaucoup écrit sur l’Angleterre des années 70 et 80. GB 84 retrace les douze mois de la grève qui opposa, en 1984-85, Margaret Thatcher aux mineurs de son pays, selon trois points de vue : celui des mineurs, celui de l’appareil d’Etat et celui de la Spécial Branch, département de la police britannique chargé du contre-espionnage et de l’antiterrorisme. Pendant toute l’année de grève, les services secrets ont lutté pied à pied pour criminaliser la grève. David Peace est féru de littérature théâtrale : Büchner fait partie de ses admirations. Martin, le mineur de GB 84, a un parcours de vie très proche de celui de Woyzeck : il se met en grève très tôt, il met en péril son couple, sa femme le quitte, et, comme Woyzeck, il n’a pas les mots pour exprimer sa jalousie. Le spectacle suit le parcours de Martin. Matraqué lors de la bataille d’Orgreave, il se retrouve à l’hôpital. On glisse alors dans un autre espace-temps, raconté avec des extraits du texte de Büchner. Martin et Woyzeck sont des personnages qui, à plus d’un siècle de distance, racontent la condition des gens de peu, en butte à des stratagèmes qui les broient et à la morgue des puissants. Pourquoi cette humanité qui a la peau dure résiste-t-elle malgré tout ?
Comment le plateau accueille-t-il ces textes ?
J.-F. M. : Au plateau, une installation métallique évoque un univers glacial et brutal. Un rail circulaire permet de dessiner plusieurs lieux différents. La tonalité de l’espace évoque la mine, les derricks, les abattoirs, des véhicules métalliques ; un univers déshumanisé et désaffecté. Jean-Baptiste Manessier a inventé une machine à jouer qui permet de passer très rapidement entre les trois strates de narration : le pouvoir, les services secrets, le monde de la mine. Neuf comédiens sont au plateau.
Pourquoi avoir choisi de porter le texte de Peace au théâtre ?
J.-F. M. : Ce qui m’intéresse et me passionne c’est de découvrir, dans l’époque qu’évoque GB 84, les prémices de l’Europe libérale d’aujourd’hui, les mêmes paroles, les mêmes argumentaires. Ce qui me bouleverse dans l’œuvre de David Peace, avec lequel je collabore depuis longtemps, c’est le sentiment d’empathie avec les victimes. Son point de vue sur ce monde est dostoïevskien, sans bonté, sans charité, mais profondément humain. Il ne fait pas l’apologie de la violence mais la comprend comme le résultat de celle qui est imposée aux individus. Il écrit dans une langue incantatoire, fiévreuse, palpitante, même si elle fait le récit de profondes catastrophes : mais ce qui palpite est ce qui vit encore.
