Dans son adaptation et mise en scène des contes de Grimm, Olivier Py parvient à célébrer avec un lumineux sens du spectaculaire l’art théâtral : une aubaine pour le jeune public, qui voit là les lumières, les costumes, la scénographie et le jeu des acteurs conjuguer leurs atouts pour révéler l’essence du conte, et ce avec une radieuse simplicité qui correspond tout à fait à la narration du conte, elle aussi simple, sans aucun apprêt ou développement psychologique. Dans tous les contes de Grimm le merveilleux côtoie le trivial, la cruauté côtoie l’amour, et enfin la mort, le malheur ou le désespoir laissent place à une happy end convenue et bienvenue. Ces contes fascinent, et abordent des thèmes fondamentaux comme la peur, le désir ou la mort. Le metteur en scène convoque dans son adaptation une atmosphère festive et féerique en rouge, noir et or qui rappelle l’univers des saltimbanques et des fanfares. « Il était une fois une fille jeune et belle, mais sa mère était morte quand elle était enfant, et sa marâtre faisait tout pour la chagriner… » Ainsi commence tristement La vraie fiancée, conte méconnu, avec un ange, un prince, un jardinier et de multiples et savoureuses péripéties.
