Le 9 janvier 1993, Jean-Claude Romand, faux médecin pris au piège de vingt ans de mensonges, assassine sa femme, ses parents et ses enfants, avant de rater son suicide. « L’adversaire » désigne le diabolique : Carrère a trouvé le titre et la problématique de son ouvrage à partir d’une lecture de la Bible : « Dans la Bible, il y a ce qu’on appelle le satan, en hébreu. Ce n’est pas comme Belzébuth ou Lucifer, un nom propre, mais un nom commun. La définition terminale du diable, c’est le menteur. Il va de soi que « l’adversaire » n’est pas Jean-Claude Romand. Mais j’ai l’impression que c’est à cet adversaire que lui, sous une forme paroxystique et atroce, a été confronté toute sa vie. ». Vincent Berger incarne à la fois Emmanuel Carrère et Jean-Claude Romand. Au-delà du fait divers sordide, est mis en scène l’embarras, pour un romancier, de s’accommoder d’une réalité qui s’est voulue fiction, de raconter l’histoire d’un homme qui a eu l’audace diabolique de vouloir l’écrire lui-même contre les circonstances et contre les événements, et de devoir s’accommoder de la compagnie, même virtuelle ou mise à distance, d’une figure de la monstruosité qui semble devoir faire honte à ceux qu’elle fascine.
