Créée en avril dernier au Théâtre de la Renaissance d’Oullins dans le cadre de la saison de l’Opéra National de Lyon, cette production marque la poursuite de l’exploration par Jean Lacornerie de l’œuvre lyrique de Kurt Weill (1900-1950). « La comédie musicale qui m’intéresse est celle des grands compositeurs, ceux qui ont apporté à ce genre un vrai discours musical » souligne-t-il. Après Signé Vénus en juin 2006, le metteur en scène retrouve son complice Scott Stroman (direction musicale) pour redonner vie pour la première fois sur une scène française à une délectable et brillante comédie musicale de 1941 sur le thème de la psychanalyse : Lady in the dark. L’œuvre – co-signée Ira Gershwin pour les textes des chansons et Moss Hart pour le livret – marqua le premier grand succès à Broadway de Kurt Weill, compositeur devenu américain en 1935.
Psychanalyse et comédie
« C’est une œuvre de théâtre hors norme dont les auteurs ont fait exploser, comme leur héroïne, les conventions ! » explique Jean Lacornerie. « La vie « réelle » est représentée par le théâtre parlé, et le rêve est représenté par la comédie musicale. Au lieu de se fondre harmonieusement, les deux s’opposent dans une construction dramaturgique savante, totalement singulière, à mille lieux des codes habituels de Broadway. Le coup de génie de Moss Hart et d’Ira Gershwin, c’est d’avoir fait de cette histoire une comédie. Comme Woody Allen le fera des années plus tard, ils ont traité de la psychanalyse sur le mode léger, non pas pour s’en moquer d’ailleurs, mais pour inventer une autre façon de raconter une histoire » ajoute le metteur en scène. Avec dans la fosse l’Orchestre des Pays de Savoie et sur scène, au centre d’une distribution juvénile brillante, Tina May dans le rôle-titre, voix indiscutée de la vie musicale londonienne.
