Avec les récentes représentations de De la maison des morts, le dernier opéra de Janacek, à l’Opéra de Lyon, production créée la saison passée au Royal Opera House de Londres dans une mise en scène radicale et ultra-réaliste de Krzysztof Warlikowski, voici que s’annonce à Paris une autre proposition du metteur en scène polonais. On peut compter sur lui pour mettre de l’huile sur le feu de cet ouvrage saisissant, démonstration cinglante du génie du jeune Chostakovitch, âgé de moins de trente ans lors de la création de l’ouvrage en 1934 au Théâtre Maly de Léningrad. Sa Lady Macbeth se nomme Katerina Ismailova et sombre, au fil des quatre actes et neuf tableaux, dans la solitude et la sauvagerie, sur fond de Russie du XIXe siècle… Un portrait sulfureux et désespérant. « Je me suis efforcé de faire un portrait psychologique des principaux personnages de la tragédie tout en dressant, dans les scènes de masse, un tableau social de la Russie de cette époque » a expliqué Chostakovitch. Sévèrement jugé en son temps – la Pravda le qualifia de « chaos » -, l’ouvrage frappe toujours par sa puissance et reste à sa manière, quatre-vingt ans après sa création, à découvrir. Surtout quand s’en empare le démiurge Warlikowski.
