Absent des scènes françaises jusqu’en 1989, l’opéra sulfureux de Chostakovitch avait fait une entrée fracassante en 1992 sur la scène de l’Opéra Bastille. La mise en scène d’André Engel, sa première pour l’Opéra de Paris, rendait parfaitement justice à l’œuvre, tout comme la direction de Myung-Whun Chung – cette interprétation fit d’ailleurs l’objet d’un enregistrement. Reprise en 1994, la production avait depuis disparu de la scène et l’ouvrage avec. Le retour à la Bastille de Lady Macbeth et de son amant criminel se fera dans une mise en scène de Martin Kusej, présentée en 2006 à l’Opéra d’Amsterdam et qui avait alors fait sensation. Le chef Hartmut Haenchen, qui a dirigé récemment Parsifal, Salomé et Capriccio à Paris pourra compter sur la distribution encensée aux Pays-Bas : Eva-Maria Westbroek dans le rôle-titre, Vladimir Vaneev dans celui de Boris ou encore Nikita Storojev dans celui du Commissaire.
