Lenglumé et Mistingue se réveillent, dans un même lit, un lendemain de soirée trop arrosée. Ils n’ont aucun souvenir précis des événements de la veille, si ce n’est la perte d’un parapluie vert et d’un mouchoir marqué des initiales « J.M. ». Lorsqu’en ouvrant un journal, ils apprennent que des objets identiques ont été retrouvés sur une scène de crime, les deux hommes vont tout faire pour dissimuler leur supposée culpabilité. « L’affaire de le rue de Lourcine est un ovni théâtral plus proche du théâtre de l’absurde et de Kafka, que du vaudeville, fait remarquer Yann Dacosta. Dans cette œuvre, la mécanique du rire est au service de la mécanique de la peur. (…) Le temps d’un quiproquo, Labiche évoque tous les tabous possibles : adultère, bisexualité, homosexualité refoulée, meurtre, alcoolisme, secrets, cachotteries, chantage et mensonges. Les masques tombent, et même si les personnages sont innocents, on sait désormais de quelle scélératesse ils sont capables. » Souhaitant montrer que la frontière entre inconvenance et bienséance est une chose fragile, le metteur en scène pointe du doigt un éventail de pulsions humaines « en lutte permanente contre la morale et la décence ».
