L’avant-dernier opéra de Janacek est sans doute le plus complexe et le plus
surprenant. Dans L’Affaire Makropoulos en effet, l’intrigue ne se dévoile
que peu à peu, s’éloignant progressivement de la conversation en musique qui
prévaut au début pour se rapprocher du mystère à mesure que les mélodies se
déversent en flots de plus en plus violents. L’?uvre porte toutes les
caractéristiques de la dernière période créatrice de Janacek : musique obsédante
qui évoque autant le leitmotiv wagnérien qu’elle annonce les compositions
répétitives de Steve Reich ou John Adams, dissociation très moderniste des
pupitres de l’orchestre au service d’une narration par fragments. Comme dans la
plupart de ses opéras, Janacek fait de la femme le personnage central, ici la
froide Emilia Marty interprétée par Angela Denoke, l’une des grandes interprètes
des héroïnes du xxe siècle, déjà entendue à Paris dans Katia Kabanova de
Janacek et Die tote Stadt de Korngold. Cette nouvelle production mise en
scène par le Polonais Krzysztof Warlikowski est dirigée par le jeune chef
tchèque Tomas Hanus.
