Née à Paris en 1968 d’un père ivoirien et d’une mère hispano-marocaine, Laïka a connu avec son album « Misery » (chez Blujazz/Codaex) un accueil formidable, tant du public que de la critique. L’hommage que cette jeune fille du monde et du jazz rend à la grande Lady Day a touché en profondeur, révélant une part de fêlure et de destin en commun… « Pendant des mois, je l’ai écoutée et réécoutée sans cesse. Pour la deviner, pour mieux la comprendre… Une vie sans père, une mère lointaine, condamne Billie à s’inventer une vie. C’est aussi ce qu’il me fallut faire. En Billie Holiday, je reconnaissais ma propre rage, le plus souvent contenue, mais qui heureusement se manifestait dans mon expression ; une douceur vraie aussi, et toujours la force d’être entière. La vie de Billie Holiday n’est qu’une succession de malheurs, une véritable tragédie. Comme elle, j’ai l’impression de porter une marque, celle du tragique » confie Laika. Pour ce concert important au New Morning qui symbolise sa récente consécration, Laika s’entoure de musiciens imparables, composant un combo à la fois puissant et sensible : Pierre-Alain Goualch au piano, Darryl Hall à la basse, Matthieu Chazarenc à la batterie et David El Malek au saxophone.
