« L’homme élégant est descendu de la limousine, il fume une cigarette anglaise. Il regarde la jeune fille au feutre d’homme et aux chaussures d’or. Il vient vers elle lentement. C’est visible, il est intimidé. ». C’est peut-être là, déjà, sur un bac au milieu du Mékong, que leurs corps s’embrasèrent en silence. Elle, fraîche adolescente de 15 ans, Française en Indochine ; lui, bel homme, riche, Chinois. L’Amant. « Ici je parle des périodes cachées de cette même jeunesse, de certains enfouissements que j’aurais opérés sur certains faits, sur certains sentiments, sur certains événements. », écrit Marguerite Duras, qui dévoile les chemins clandestins d’un amour, passionnel, voluptueux, impossible, laissé en suspens par l’exil du retour, à jamais là pourtant. « J’y ai retrouvé cette musicalité de l’écriture que j’aime. Des thèmes qui m’obsèdent en tant qu’actrice : l’isolement, la solitude, la peur, les mots, l’alcool, la maison. C’est une rencontre quasi animale, instinctive. », raconte Astrid Bas. Accompagnée au violon par le compositeur Ami Flammer, la comédienne a imaginé un espace noir, où le récit s’inscrit en une suite de plans séquences. Où chacun dessine ses propres ombres sur la partition.
