Dans cette oeuvre publiée en 1967, Marguerite Duras s’inspire d’un tragique fait divers de 1949 : le meurtre d’un homme par sa femme, qui dépèce le corpset chaque soir en jette un morceau dans un train de marchandises. La police l’a retrouvée en remarquant que tous les trains passaient par un viaduc de Savigny-sur-Orge. Elle a avoué mais n’a jamais pu expliquer son crime. Explorant cette folle incapacité à pouvoir dire pourquoi elle a commis le meurtre, le texte de Duras met en présence trois personnages : Claire Lannes, qui a tué sa cousine Marie-Thérèse Bousquet, sourde et muette, son mari Pierre Lannes, et l’interrogateur, ni policier, ni juge, ni ami. Un trio qui requiert un remarquable jeu d’acteurs. Le talent et la qualité de présence de Ludmila Mikaël, Ariel Garcia-Valdès et André Wilms devraient ici se nourrir d’une intériorité oscillant entre l’enfermement plombé des existences et la nécessité de libérer les tempêtes intérieures. Marie-Louise Bischofberger souhaite « rendre L’Amante anglaise proche d’un documentaire ; en exprimer l’hyper-réalisme et ne pas entrer dans une fausse mélodie durassienne ».
