Julien a 12 ans. Il rêve d’un père idéal, un père qui – contrairement au sien – serait plus attentif à ce qu’il fait, à ce qu’il est. En regardant par la fenêtre de sa chambre, il remarque un homme solitaire parmi les clients du café d’en bas. C’est Pascal, un quadragénaire amateur de mots croisés que l’adolescent choisit, sans lui demander son avis, comme père de substitution. « En écrivant L’Apprenti, fait observer Daniel Keene, je tenais à éviter les clichés habituels sur les pères et les fils, notamment le lieu commun qui voudrait qu’une telle relation soit nécessairement conflictuelle et hostile. Je tenais à créer une certaine délicatesse, une certaine “légèreté de touche” ». Cette partition en finesse est interprétée par Florent Houdu et Jean-Marc Talbot. Sous la direction de Yann Dacosta, les deux comédiens chercheront à « rappeler aux enfants et aux parents, pour reprendre les mots du metteur en scène, que leurs discussions, leurs échanges et la tendresse sont trois choses indispensables pour leur bien-être ».
