L’Apprentissage est le résultat d’une commande passée en 1993 à Jean-Luc Lagarce par Roland Fichet qui lui demandait un « récit de naissance ». Le résultat tient plutôt en un « récit de renaissance » comme le remarque Sylvain Maurice, metteur en scène de cette étonnante découverte d’un sujet par lui-même dont l’esprit se libère progressivement de la gangue corporelle qui l’emprisonne et le réduit, pour réapprendre petit à petit à être humain. De la première paupière ouverte à la première sortie autorisée de l’hôpital, « celui qui raconte » dit l’étonnant, le balbutiant, le glorieux et le misérable de ces quelques semaines passées à comprendre progressivement que l’existence est la forme de la vie. D’un corps machine, ou « sac », fait de membres et d’organes désunis au début, émerge progressivement un individu autonome et une personne restaurée dans son langage et réinstallée dans l’intersubjectivité.
Le corps comme une scène
Sylvain Maurice choisit un traitement théâtral qui évite avec habileté et pudeur les pièges du réalisme hospitalier. Alain Macé, seul, fragile et comme égaré, retrouve le monde et ses objets comme s’il redécouvrait en même temps le langage et ses possibilités créatrices. Le comédien mime le corps apprivoisant ses prouesses et son environnement comme le ferait un paralytique soudain miraculé. Au fur et à mesure de la guérison et des progrès, l’homme remplace le pantin. Alain Macé dit le texte de Lagarce avec autant de précision que de force, ciselant chaque réplique pour lui donner tout son sens. L’art du comédien est parfaitement maîtrisé et la prouesse scénique remarquable.
