29 mai 1912, Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris. L’Après-midi d’un faune bousculait soudain la torpeur des conventions chorégraphiques. Nijinski, héraut des Ballets russes de Diaghilev, rompait avec la bienséance des codes académiques et brisait l’icône du virtuose soliste. Près d’un siècle plus tard, Raimund Hoghe se glisse, après beaucoup d’autres, dans l’ombre de cette partition mythique. Le chorégraphe allemand, dramaturge du Tanztheater de Pina Bausch dans les années 80 avant de créer ses propres pièces, continue de creuser son chemin de l’histoire de la danse, suivant la piste ouverte avec Sacre – The Rite of Spring (2004), Swan Lake, 4 Acts (2005) et Boléro Variations (2007). « J’ai regardé beaucoup de versions différentes – pour essayer d’en saisir l’essence – mais tout en ayant en tête qu’il ne fallait surtout pas essayer de les copier, explique-t-il. Ce qui m’intéresse, c’est le fait que beaucoup de gens les connaissent – ou croient les connaître. ». Travaillant sur la structure de la pièce, il croise Debussy et Mahler, rituel minimaliste et résonances intimes pour composer « son » Après-midi avec le danseur Emmanuel Eggermont.
