Le malaise suicidaire de l’adolescence, l’enfermement de la femme objet, la rivalité entre père et fils et entre mère et fille sont des thèmes universels, révélateurs de la complexité humaine. Dans la pièce de Mishima, la jeune fille est atteinte d’une maladie mortelle ; auprès d’elle, se tient une parente éloignée, sorte de coryphée. La jeune fille et son frère s’aiment d’un amour ambigu ; ils ont le projet d’assassiner leur mère, « l’être le plus mauvais du monde », qui veut de son côté, assassiner leur père. La mère se dit asservie à son époux qui la mortifie : elle demande au fils de tuer ce père indigne. Le fils, ballotté entre la sœur et la mère, succombe aux attraits charnels de sa mère pour retourner dans les bras de sa sœur. Il est incapable de tuer, et, cédant aux exigences de sa sœur, trouve l’apaisement dans un double suicide. La mère reste seule face à son époux. L’Arbre des tropiques est une métaphore sur la monstruosité de l’être entre le désir de s’accomplir et la peur d’assumer. Les artifices des fantasmes se prêtent à une théâtralité exaltante.
