L’œuvre de Johann Adolph Hasse (1699-1783) n’encombre plus guère aujourd’hui les scènes lyriques. Il fut pourtant au xviiie siècle un véritable héros de l’opéra italien – bien qu’il soit de Hambourg – qu’il contribua à répandre en Europe, après s’en être abreuvé à la source, auprès de Porpora et Scarlatti. Ami intime de Métastase, star des librettistes à la cour de Vienne, il lui emprunta, comme tant d’autres, nombre des livrets de sa bonne centaine d’opéras. La plupart répondent au modèle de l’opera seria.
Égayer et émouvoir
Larinda e Vanesio appartient à une tout autre veine. Composé sur un livret d’Antonio Salvi et Angelo Carasale lui-même adapté du Bourgeois gentilhomme de Molière, il s’inscrit dans le genre de l’intermezzo, intermède bouffon destiné à égayer le public des soirées d’opera seria. On y trouve le barbon qui se veut gentilhomme (Mourad Amirkhanian) et la servante travestie en baronne (Anne-Charlotte Montville). Il est d’ailleurs significatif que cet ouvrage, composé en 1734 pour la cour de Dresde où il venait de prendre ses fonctions de maître de chapelle, est presque l’exact contemporain de la Serva Padrona de Pergolèse, qui eut son rôle dans la « Querelle des Bouffons ». Moins prisonnier des conventions que l’opera seria, dont le succès reposait avant tout sur la mise en avant des prouesses des castrats, mais requérant néanmoins une technique vocale éprouvée, l’opéra bouffe de cette époque est paradoxalement plus à même d’émouvoir.
