L’art de ne croire en rien : l’expression sonne avec l’air narquois, un peu provoc même, d’un manifeste programmatique sans illusion. Il sied bien à notre époque désenchantée, qui a jeté par-dessus bord les idéologies et autres vieilleries du siècle dernier. Il fut pourtant porté autrefois par un ouvrage clandestin, qui hanta le religieux Moyen-âge : L’art de ne croire en rien, autre titre pour La Béatitude des Chrétiens ou Fléo de la foy (1573), de Geoffroy Vallée qui finit sur le bûcher en 1574 avec son forfait manuscrit – 16 pages fatales ! « L’homme n’a aise, béatitude, consolation et félicité qu’en savoir, lequel est engendré d’intelligence, et, lors, le croire en lui demeure, veuille ou non, car il est engendré du savoir, et jamais n’en peut être vaincu; mais celui qui croit par foi ou par crainte et peur qu’on lui fait, ce peut être diverti, changé, et détourné quand il juge chose meilleure… » écrivait-il. Quelques siècles plus tard, Jean-François Peyret relance la question sur scène. A sa manière : avec ses comédiens, mais aussi des scientifiques, philosophes, économistes, prêtres qui confronteront leurs points de vue sur la thématique de la croyance, « qui a fait retour avec les déboires de la raison des Lumières ». Tout un programme en effet.
