Une table, deux chaises, une bouteille d’eau et « un corps humain, 1,87m, belge »… Rien de particulièrement propice à l’hilarité. Quoique… En quelques mouvements d’une adroite gaucherie et tout aussi précise maladresse, voilà que le décor austère vibre soudain d’une rafale de sonore allégresse : Jos Houben, grand énergumène polyglotte, belge donc, dégingandé tout en souplesse, a débuté sa conférence sur l’art du rire. Francs, massifs ou bien moqueurs, pincés, parfois cyniques, souvent libérateurs… Ces éclats intempestifs propres à l’humain, qui fendent le corps et réjouissent l’esprit, ne cessent en effet depuis des siècles de taquiner les farcesques et burlesques en tout genre, autant que les médecins et philosophes. « J’irais jusqu’à risquer un classement des philosophes suivant le rang de leur rire. » écrivait Nietzsche, à la fin de Par delà le bien et le mal. Elève de Jacques Lecoq, où il enseigne aujourd’hui, cofondateur du Théâtre de complicité, le comédien orateur privilégie quant à lui les travaux pratiques et démonte à vue les mécanismes qui tirent irrésistiblement les zygomatiques envers et malgré nous. Démonstration à l’appui.
Hilarante démonstration
Puisant dans le bréviaire des gestes quotidiens et catastrophes ordinaires, il analyse l’imparable rigolade que provoquent la culbute involontaire et ses variantes. Plus, il explique, exécute et déclenche l’hilarité en chœur… Accidents en série, chutes malencontreuses, étourderies chroniques mettent ainsi en jeu l’essence même du rire : le délicat équilibre entre le haut et le bas, la nécessaire et difficile adaptation permanente à l’environnement et à la société que réclame la vie. En scène, Jos Houben mène le jeu avec habilité et bonhommie, s’adjoignant au besoin des comparses désignés parmi les spectateurs. Devenue spectacle, cette « master class » qu’il a donnée aux quatre coins du globe ne prétend pas à la docte conférence et reste un amusement pétillant. « La seule cure contre la vanité, c’est le rire, et la seule faute qui soit risible, c’est la vanité. » constatait Bergson dans son essai Le rire. Il est bon de temps en temps de s’en amuser…
