Hasse Karlsson, narrateur adulte, vient visiter les lieux révolus de son enfance tandis que sa mère se meurt. L’occasion de faire retour sur des débuts chaotiques. Allez savoir pourquoi tel camarade nous attire tellement. On ne pourrait le dire, si ce n’est à la manière approximative de Hasse qui relate le trouble que provoquait naguère en lui L’Hirondelle, un compagnon de jeux nouvellement arrivé dans le petit village enneigé des grands espaces suédois. Le père du premier coupe du bois dans la forêt tandis que celui du second est inspecteur des Eaux et Forêts. Et la mère du narrateur, serveuse dans une gargote – elle aurait voulu voguer sur les mers – ne supporte pas les gens huppés. Une différence sociale qui accuse net la différence des tempéraments. L’un est velléitaire et l’autre, cruel et tyrannique, même si « on ne réussissait pas à savoir s’il mentait ou s’il disait la vérité. » C’est que les desseins de l’Hirondelle sont confus : « On est là pour répandre la terreur et tous ceux qui passent sur le pont, on les arrête ». Ce sont comme par hasard les femmes qui seront les victimes désignées de ces terroristes en herbe. La veuve du maquignon d’abord dont on vole le chapeau, Janine la femme sans nez qui joue du trombone et dont on vernit les groseilliers et enfin Aurélia, qui parle à Dieu… et dont la fin sera tragique.
Les garnements courent, buttent sur les obstacles, sont terrassés
Comment expliquer ces expériences initiatiques absurdes ? « C’était la première fois que j’avais un copain qui n’était pas comme tout le monde. » Bien sûr, il faut s’exercer à être adulte et, à bien considérer, ceux-ci ne cessent de se venger les uns sur les autres. Pourquoi ne pas répandre soi-même la vengeance ? Dans la mise en scène d’Alain Batis, les deux acolytes, Patrick Palmero et David Arribe – des enfants adultes -, cape et béret pour l’Hirondelle, chaussettes longues et casquette pour Hasse, s’inscrivent à merveille dans un paysage de neige glaciale et de vent givrant grâce aux panneaux de voilage blanc de Sandrine Lamblin. Les garnements courent, buttent sur les obstacles, sont terrassés. Les figures féminines (Laetitia Poulalion, Axelle Simon, Régine Trieau), l’une un peu sorcière, l’autre un peu Marilyn et la dernière, plutôt « foldingue », sans oublier la mère aux allures de mater dolorosa, sont forcément caricaturales dans leur harcèlement subi. Elles auraient gagné en véracité en privilégiant la nuance. Toujours est-il que le suspens est respecté ; on ne saurait faire la fine bouche devant tant d’enthousiasme à expliquer une fâcherie longue de vingt-six ans entre un fils et sa mère.
